The Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) participated in the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) Safety Week 2026, where the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Patrick K. Ofori, delivered a keynote address at the official launch of the programme.
Speaking on the theme, “Managing Risk Before It Becomes an Incident,” Dr. Ofori emphasised that incidents in the downstream petroleum sector are rarely sudden. They often stem from risks that are not identified, assessed, or effectively managed at an early stage, underscoring the need for a proactive and structured approach to safety.
He highlighted tanker operations as one of the most visible and risk-exposed aspects of the industry, noting that safety failures extend beyond operations to impact communities and public confidence. This reinforces the need for a shift from reactive responses to proactive risk management, supported by a strong safety culture, disciplined operations, and continuous monitoring across the supply chain.
Dr. Ofori further stressed that safety must go beyond compliance to become embedded in how organisations think, act, and lead. He called for stronger collaboration and coordinated efforts among regulators, industry players, and stakeholders to improve safety outcomes across the sector.
CBOD also reaffirms that safety remains a core priority across its operations. Member depots and facilities operate in line with established regulatory requirements and industry standards, with strict adherence to safety protocols, routine inspections, and continuous staff training to prevent incidents and safeguard lives.
He commended the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), the National Petroleum Authority, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for championing this important initiative to strengthen safety standards and protect lives within Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
CBOD remains committed to advancing safety, operational excellence, and industry collaboration in support of a resilient and responsible downstream petroleum sector.
