The inaugural Downstream Women’s Summit 2025, organised by the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) and National Petroleum Authority (NPA), was held on Friday, 14th March 2025, at the National Petroleum Authority in Accra. The summit was an inspiring and transformative event dedicated to empowering women in the downstream petroleum sector. The summit brought together industry leaders, professionals, and key stakeholders for an afternoon of insightful discussions, knowledge sharing, and networking.
The highlight of the event was a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Balancing Corporate Life with Personal and Family Responsibilities: Overcoming Challenges Faced by Women in the Energy Sector.” Moderated by Dr. Sheila Addo, Deputy CEO (Technical), NPA, the panel featured distinguished industry leaders, including Ivy Apea Owusu, CEO of Cirrus Oil Services Ltd.; Yaa Serwaa Alifo, Head of Downstream Business at Sahara Group (Ghana); Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, Deputy Managing Director at BOST; and Redeemer Kookailey Hansen Esq., Executive Secretary/HR Manager at Misyl Energy Company Ltd.
The discussion emphasised that for women to succeed in the energy sector, they must first and foremost strive for excellence in their respective fields. Being highly skilled and knowledgeable sets the foundation for career growth and recognition. Equally important is the need for women to be bold and confident, ensuring that they take up leadership roles, make their voices heard, and make impactful decisions in their workplaces.
Beyond professional excellence, the panellists highlighted the importance of building strong support systems. Women were encouraged to surround themselves with people who uplift them, both professionally and personally. Networking, mentorship, and collaboration among women in the industry were underscored as essential tools for career progression and success.
A critical topic that emerged from the discussion was sexual harassment in the workplace. Panellists stressed the need for organisations to implement training programmes to educate staff on what constitutes harassment and the consequences of such actions. Women were urged to speak up, document incidents via email, and seek redress to ensure accountability and a safer work environment.
The Downstream Women’s Summit 2025 was more than just an event, it was an eye-opening and educational gathering that reinforced the need for women to support each other, be bold, and strive for excellence in their careers. It served as a call to action for companies to foster inclusivity, mentorship, and workplace safety for women.
The Chamber is committed to hosting this summit annually, ensuring that women in energy are not only celebrated but also empowered with the resources, connections, and knowledge needed to thrive. The summit has paved the way for a future where women will occupy their rightful position as leaders, innovators, and change-makers within the energy sector.
